     Demetri stared at the corpse, disbelieving. How could someone go from moving, to dead, truly dead, just like that? Well, humans of course, it happened all the time, but someone who lived for centuries? It seemed as though he were just sleeping perhaps, but the gaping chest wound did distract from that concept. Demetri stared into the wound, seeing the glistening slick of unused organs within. The heart.. the damned heart... What was the appeal? Was it really all it promised? Was it too late? Would it work? Wait, what was he thinking?

In which people used to be on fire a lot.
 Demetri slapped at his forehead, the echoing screech of that awful damned God-music made his brain feel bruised and throbbing. He had always wondered if that was worse for Tomasz, who never normally let himself be caught in a moment of weakness. It seemed, the answer was yes.

UNGHHHHH I FINALLY DID IT! This was a tour de force of sorts, so difficult I exploded and reassembled by sheer determination. I hope you guys enjoyed it even though it is late and blah etc etc. Don't feel bad if you don't recognize every character in the bottom half, some I just made up for the picture. (Though there are most main characters and a few minor ones as well!) Feel free to speculate on any of the scenes taking place in Demetri's little heart-trip. :3 Stick around for a in-between chapter interlude, and for the first time ever-- a Kingfisher "Intermission" to mark the half-way point of the story! It is all downhill from here. Or something. :O HAPPY END OF CHAPTER I LOVE YOUUUUU. <3

1.)

(Fran waves dismissively, feeling all 'no big deal' about this whole thing. Demetri is doing something strange with the stake)

FRAN: Why didn’t we do this years ago?!

DEMETRI: Please don’t let this just be a metaphor...

2.)

(Fran looks concerned about what Demy is doing.)

FRAN: Who’da thought it’d be so... What are you doing?

3.)

(Demetri holds Dragomir's heart.)

DEMETRI: I have a strange idea.

4.)

DEMETRI: I don’t know if it will work, but... someone needs to be able to take care of this awful situation.

5.)

(Demetri holds the heart to his mouth.)

DEMETRI: If this kills me -- I love you Fran and tell Jack-- Oh hell, what am I saying? I won't be around to care.

6.)

(Fran looks on in horror as the Demetri coughs and gags off screen.)

7.)

(Sarah is startled out of sleep by a vision of a bloody mouthed Demetri.)

DEMETRI: Did it work?

8.)

(An elaborate panel, Demetri holds his glowing heart as he witnesses visions of Dragomir's past. There are a number of images including nude people, murdered bodies, people on fire, people from the past and even himself. This panel includes these words...)

Hold still dammit.

(Fran grabs Demetri's shoulder as he looks pass-out-y.)

FRAN: I just saw your face! Why?!

(Demetri collapses.)

FRAN: Demy?!
